The Winklevoss twins, Tyler and Cameron, are identical twin brothers known for their early investment in Bitcoin and their role in the founding of the Gemini Trust Company LLC, a digital currency exchange.
The Winklevoss brothers were born in Southampton, New York, in 1981. They attended Harvard University, where they rowed for the varsity crew team and graduated with degrees in economics. After graduation, the twins enrolled in Oxford University, where they earned graduate degrees in business administration.
The Winklevosses first gained public attention in 2004 when they sued Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, claiming that he stole the idea for the social media platform from them while they were all students at Harvard. The legal battle was settled out of court and the Winklevosses received a settlement of $65 million.
In 2013, the Winklevosses invested $11 million of their settlement into Bitcoin, buying 1% of all the bitcoins in circulation at the time. As the value of Bitcoin rose, so did the value of their investment. They are reportedly the first Bitcoin billionaires in 2017.
In 2015, the brothers founded the Gemini Trust Company LLC, which is a digital currency exchange and custodian that allows customers to buy, sell, and store digital assets such as Bitcoin and Ethereum. The company is based in New York and is subject to the regulations of the New York State Department of Financial Services.
The Winklevosses are also known for their involvement in the venture capital industry, having invested in companies such as BitInstant and SumZero. They have also been vocal advocates for Bitcoin and cryptocurrency, appearing on various news shows and at conferences to discuss the future of digital currencies
